Academic Advisory Council
Introduction

The Academic Advisory Council of the University of North America is an important link between UoNA and the community. The primary focus of the Council is to provide a big picture view for the university's academic planning and implementation activities. Although the council is advisory, it performs an invaluable service to the university and can have considerable impact on future directions taken by UoNA.

Mission Statement

The mission of the University of North America is to provide a high quality education that is student centered, that unifies theory and practice, and that is international in scope.

UoNA - Introduction to our Academic Advisory Concil
Council Responsibilities

The Council provides guidance to the university's academic program by offering its perspective in the following areas:

  • Current trends, and requirements in the evaluation of curricula in order to recommend changes as necessary to keep curricula vital and relevant
  • Challenges facing UoNA graduates globally
  • Changes in the labor market that may affect employment potential in current and proposed programs
  • Expertise to further strengthen the course work UoNA provides by recommending topics and areas for inclusion or deletion from the curricula
  • Suggestions and feedback on the course work available to the college students via on-line learning and in classroom instruction
  • Materials and resources of relevance to the curricula
  • Opportunities for faulty in-service training and/or professional development
  • Participate in strategic planning and policy development and provide oversight that will lead to improvement in operations at the semi-annual meetings
  • Potential firms for student internships and cooperative education opportunities
  • Recommend personnel from business and industry as potential instructors and/or potential council members
  • Assist in providing public awareness of the university's high quality programs
Membership

Membership of the Council consists of professional representatives of organizations in the community and industry with diverse experience and expertise. Membership may also include students and representatives from the general public. Members are committed to excellence in education. The Council consists of not fewer than five members, and the president of the university or his/her designate serves as an ex-officio member of the council. The deans and faculty from the given program areas serve as non-voting, ex-officio members of the council. The chair may designate other ex-officio members with consent of the council.

Process for Appointing Members

New members may be appointed to the council by recommendation by university personnel, and/or present advisory council members.

Academic Advisory Council Meetings

The Advisory Council meets at least twice each academic year and may meet more frequently, when there are academic issues that require the council's action.

Academic Advisory Council Officers

The officers of the council consist of a chair and vice-chair and are elected each year from the council membership at its first meeting of the new academic year. Officers serve terms of one year intervals and may serve consecutive terms subject to a vote by the advisory council.
